Bodysurf Baz on a Queensland beach

G’day. I’m Baz.

I’ve been bodysurfing Australian beaches my whole life. No board, no plan, just me and whatever the ocean’s offering that day.

I grew up on the Queensland coast and learned to read waves before I could properly read a book. From Nobby’s and Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads and Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, and up to Kings Beach, Dickie Beach and Golden Beach on the Sunshine Coast — these were my classrooms. Bodysurfing was never something I decided to take up — it was just what you did when the surf was pumping, and you didn’t have a board handy. Somewhere along the way, it stopped being the backup option and became the whole point.

Why no gear?

People ask me this a lot. I’ve tried handplanes, I’ve used fins, and I’ve borrowed mates’ bodyboards when the waves were too good to miss. And they’re fun. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

But there’s something about riding a wave with nothing between you and the water that I keep coming back to. It’s the most connected you can feel in the ocean. No equipment to blame, no equipment to credit. Just you and the wave.

That’s what this site is about.

What you’ll find here

Bodysurf Guide covers everything from learning the basics to finding the world’s best breaks. If you’re just starting out, head to the Learn section. If you’re already in the water and want to know what gear is actually worth buying, the Gear section has honest reviews. And if you’re chasing waves further afield, check out Destinations.

I’m not trying to tell you how to bodysurf. Just sharing what I know and what I’ve found along the way.

See you in the water.
